Meet Krystal

Krystal, had just turned 5 and her little sister Bella was 2 and a half when they first came to live with us.

Krystal just didn’t get why she had to go to school. She didn’t get why she was in out of home care and she didn’t get why she couldn’t be with her family.

Krystal was a good, bright kid doing everything she could just to survive and fit in. Every year since she could remember, she had been moved from carer to carer never settling in. Never finding her forever home.

One day we talked about what she wanted to do when she grew up. Krystal thought her best option was to have a baby as soon as she was 13 or 14 years old just like her mum. Her older sisters had that same plan.

When asked what she would be if she could be anything in the whole wide world Krystal said “ I don’t know … its not like I get to choose”.

The Power to Choose

Educating Krystal about school and why education is so important began in earnest. Pointing out role models and how the world worked was key.

Explaining to Krystal if she listened in class, did her best to get good grades and stayed in school until year 12, she could choose to do anything. That conversation was transformative.

Krystal took it all in and looked like she had just discovered Santa Clause, chocolate cake and ice-cream all at once. With the widest of eyes and complete astonishment she told me no one had ever explained how things worked. “Wow “ is all she kept saying.

Some months later when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Krystal turned and said “I want to be like you. Tell me what you did to become you?”.

for Bright Kids

There were many more talks about a future and one day Krystal announced “when I grow up I am going to be a vet nurse or teacher”.

Krystal and Bella eventually left our family to live with their grandmother and older sisters. Every day we hope the girls are Ok and we hope Krystal is working hard at school.

Krystal is the inspiration behind our decision to start the LAHAT Foundation where we focus on making a difference helping bright kids stay in school.

sChOOL Kids financially supports families of bright kids. We work with schools to ensure kids get support when their families cant. Our goal is that our kids finish school and can make good choices for their future.
